Reversing Falls restaurant may get reprieve from demolition

The city of Saint Johnhas cancelled its demolition contract for theReversing Falls Restaurant, leading to speculation the iconic structure may be given a lifeline.

Earlier this year,Saint John businessman MaxKotlowskimade a $1millionoffer to invest private sector money into rebuilding and upgrading the iconic structure.

Kotlowski declined an on-camera interview over a concern it could derail discussions aboutleasing theproperty.

But he said Friday he feels he and the city are close to a deal.

For those in the tourism industry who have seen the shuttered building as a blight on the summer season,the demolition cancellation has renewed hopes something positive will happen soon.

"There could be something brewing. We really hope so because we would like to see the 'wow' factor that could be if it was re-opened," said Beth KellyHattofAquilaTours.

'Number one attraction'

"We just think that Reversing Falls is our number one attraction. Let's make it look like a number one attraction."

A tourist viewing the falls agreed.

"I think it might be a good thing to save if it benefits the community here and it benefits me as a tourist, " saidTamaralynKiesoof Wisconsin.

The Saint John Development Corporation sent a letter to city council, renewing its support for development at the Reversing Falls.

But its chairman says that shouldn't be taken as an endorsement for Kotlowski's plan.

"We haven't seen the detailed plans for this area. What we are trying to do is indicate that we are in support of private investment which provides quality products on the waterfront," chairman Stephen Alexander said.

The city won't say exactly what the cancellation of the demolition means.City council still has to approve any development plans for the site.
