A teenager was stabbed in Saint John, N.B., Saturday after he apparently intervened in a street assault.

Sgt. Peter Fres said the incident happened on Peters Street in the uptown area. He said the young man saw at least two older men beating up a third man on the street.

"He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. There was an assault going on and he tried to intervene and he got the worst of it," Fres said Sunday. "He thought he'd even the number up, but it didn't work out for him."

Fres did not know if the teenager, aged 17, knew the other men. Police arrestedtwo men, aged 29 and 56. Both are due in court Sunday to be charged with aggravated assault.

The teenager is sufferingnon-life threatening injuries. Police did not know the condition of the victim of the original assault.
