NB Power says more than 2,000 customers in the St. Stephen area are without power after a substation was vandalized by thieves.

Spokeswoman Meghan Gerrish says the Harvey substation was damaged sometime overnight Friday.

Gerrish says some equipment was significantly damaged and copper was stolen.

"They were in there to steal copper," she said. "It's very dangerous and it's really unfortunate for the 2,000 people who are without power today."

She says crews are working to repair the damages and power is expected to be restored Saturday afternoon.

Gerrish says police are investigating the incident.

The CBC's Matt Bingley reports that the power outage led to the cancellation of a basketball game at Harvey High School and the Harvey Winter Carnival.
