Apollo arrives in Blanc Sablon after spending more than 30 hours stuck in ice

A provincial ferry is finally docked in Blanc Sablon after spending more than a day stuck in the ice on its way from Newfoundland.

A provincial ferry is finally docked in Blanc Sablon after spending more than a day stuck in the ice on its way from Newfoundland.

The Apollo left Newfoundland around 7 a.m. Thursday, but mechanical issues with the icebreaker that was clearing a path meant the ferry could go no further.

The ferry had spent more than 30 hours stuck by noon Friday, and posts on social media say there were70 passengers on board

The Henry Larsen arrived by 11:30 a.m. Friday, and guidedthe Apollo to dockat Blanc Sablon. It arrived just before 4 p.m.

The Canadian Coast Guard said all passengers on the ferry were safe, and that members of the Coast Guardship Henry Larsen would make necessary repairs on site in Blanc Sablon.

Due to extreme ice pressure all departures in the Strait of Belle Isle for Fridayhave been cancelled.
