After decades in business, the Battery Hotel in St. John's closed its doors for good on Thursday.

The landmark on Signal Hill has run its course as a hotel, but will be serving another purpose for Memorial University.

In mid-November, MUN purchased the building for an undisclosed price.

The university plans to move offices to the site, as well as use the rooms for graduate student housing.

University officials noted that the school had been spending approximately $1 million a year leasing space around the city for those purposes.
