Beach resident fed up with illegal fires, dumping

A Conception Bay South man wants something done about illegal dumping and fires, which he saysare becoming more common on Lance Cove Beach in Upper Gullies.

Tom Humphries lives nearby and fears for his home when people use the wood and trash dumped on the beach to light fires.

"Every year there's garbage," said Humphries, whose house is only about 50 feet from a wooded area.

"Garbage and fires close to the woods."

In one 10-day stretch this summer, the fire department had to goto the areafour times to douse fires.

Humphries says council isn't taking the threat seriously, which makes for a lot of sleepless nights.

"They're nonchalant about it," said Humphries."But if it was their house I'm sure they'd be coming right quick to get it done."

Humphries said people are supposed to get permits before starting fires.

He'd like to see more frequent patrols, some warning signs put up, and charges brought against people who are caught.

Conception Bay South Mayor Woodrow French told CBC News he'll look into it.
