A new park dedicated to the farming community in the Goulds neighbourhood of St. John's was officially opened on Saturday.

The park is situated on land donated by the Bidgood family, who have owned a supermarket and wholesale boutique in the community.

There are walking trails, picnic tables, a sculpture, and a plaque created by artist Gerald Squires - as well as an outdoor classroom.

Roger and Jennie Bidgood donated the land for the park 14 years ago, but both have since passed away.

Their daughter Elaine Driessen has worked since then to ensure the family's dream comes true.

"My parents donated 38 acres of land to the city of St. John's and it was a visionary thing for my folks to do, to preserve that acreage for generations to come, so that we'd always have green space in the Goulds," said Driessen.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for Bidgood Park was Saturday afternoon.
