Big boost for autism farm from 'Divas'

The benefit concert "Our Divas Do Broadway", which wrapped up at Mile One Stadium Saturday night, has raised more than a $100,000 for the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The money will help the Society build Shamrock Farm, a vocational and life skills training center for people with autism.

Part of last night's proceeds came from the provincial government with Premier Danny Williams presenting a cheque for $50,000.

Elaine Dobbin, patron of the fundraising campaign, welcomed the contribution, but also challenged the Premier.

"I'm asking you please, to match our funds. I'll say to you what you said to Prime Minister Martin, which I believe is working. You said, 'Mr. Prime Minister, give us our money from the claw back or I won't vote for you.'"

Shamrock Farms, to be built in Pippy Park, will cost $1.5 million. Before last night's concert, the Society had raised less than half of that amount.
