Dennis O'Keefe opposes postal cuts; writes to Mulcair, Trudeau

The mayor of St. John's is trying to turnmail delivery in his city into a federal election issue, with letters totwo federal party leaders that says his constituents are"adamantly opposed" to Canada Post's decision to eliminate home delivery.

Dennis O'Keefe sent letters to NDP Leader Tom Mulcair and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

The mayor's office saidO'Keefe, however, did not a letter to Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, nor to Green Leader Elizabeth May.

In the letters, O'Keefe states that the decision to eliminate door-to-door delivery has caused "consternation and anxiety" for many Canadians.

He goes on to state that seniors and people with disabilities will besignificantly affectedbyCanada Post's decision. People, he said, who are already"some of the most vulnerable" in society.

The mayor ended his letter by asking the leaders what they intend to do about the home delivery policy, should their party be elected.

"I, along with many residents of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada await your response."
