Flooding closes Main Street and Petries Street bridges in Corner Brook

An unseasonably warm day that's brought high winds and heavy rainfall to Corner Brook forced the Main Street and Petries Street bridges to shut down on Wednesday.

Heavy rain led to the closure of Main Street bridge

High winds and heavy rainfall to Corner Brookforced the Main Street and Petries Street bridges to shut down on Wednesday, during a day ofunseasonably warm weather.

Mayor Charles Pendersaid flooding has been reportedall throughout the city, and that the Main Street bridge was closed around noon as a safety precaution.

The bridge, which has beenknown to be susceptible to flash flooding, is scheduled to be replaced as soon asfunding becomes available, Pender said.

The bridge reopened for a few hours on Wednesday afternoon, but later closed again.

Pender said it is best to avoid the area until temperatures drop later Wednesday.

City crews were busy Wednesday afternoon trying to clear an ice jam from the stream in the pouring rain.

Pender saidPetries Street is closed due to flooding from the intersection of Curling Street to the intersection of Hilliard's Road.

A temporary boil water order had been in effect for the street, but has since been lifted.

Robertson Road is also closed due to flooding from the intersection of Riverhead Road to the intersection of Hillview Road. Other road closures include Upper Boone's Road and Upper Walbourne's Road.

The city says it is receivinga large number of calls for sand, and crews areresponding as quickly as possible. Residents are asked to be aware of hazards related to flooding in their homesand to notify insurers right away of any damage.
