It's better known as a site for partying, but on Saturday morning at least for a little while George Street transformed into a place of bliss and tranquility.

As part of the grand-opening celebration fora new Lululemon storein St. John's, George Street Festival organizers worked with the store to host a free yoga session in the middle of the street.

Yoga instructor Laura Beth Power said it was a great opportunity to openthe street to a more diverse use.

"I was a bit hesitant [at first] just because George St doesn't have the best reputation for health and wellness," she said.

"But as I was thinking about it,I thought okaythis is a really awesome opportunity to reinvent George Street."

Power said a portion of the street was pressure washed overnight, andabout 300 people came out to participate in the class, which sheled as musical group Green and Gold provided backing accompaniment.

She said organizers of the George Street Festival were pleasantly surprised with the turnout, and plans are already in motion to hold yoga on the street during next year's festival.

"I would love to see 1,000 people out next year and fill George Street right from the Yellowbelly down to Kelly's Pub," said Power.
