Gros Morne fracking plan on UNESCO radar

UNESCO's World Heritage Committee is worried about proposed fracking near Gros Morne National Park, on Newfoundland's west coast.

Concerns surroundingthe world heritage site were voiced during the committee's annual meeting, being held in Phonm Penh, Cambodia.

Black Spruce Exploration wants to use hydraulic fracturing to find oil and gas in Sally's Cove and other areas that are a few hundred metres from the park's boundaries.

UNESCO made recommendations to the committee once it learned of the fracking plans in May.

Delegates at the Cambodia meeting asked Canada to provide an environmental impact assessment on the world heritage site.

The committee has also asked Canada to invite a UNESCO sanctioned monitoring mission to the area to do its own risk assessment.
