It's the end of an era for a short-lived convenience store and deli on Water Street west in St. John's.

The owner of Healy's Deli announced the store's closure in a Facebook post on Friday.

Tom Healy told CBC News that while he gave it a go, the challenges of running a small business in an increasingly tough economic climate proved to be too much.

"In the week leading up to the [provincial] budget we noticed a drop in sales and then after the budget was released they were slow to come back," he said.

"Over the summer then we did pick up again and things seemed to be going alright, but then the fall update came out and almost overnight again the sales just dropped right off."

Healy's Deli is just the latest Water Street business to shut down.

Ballistic and Templeton'salso announced they would close earlier this week.

The store will open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m onMonday to Friday this week to try and sell off remaining stock.
