Flooding reported across Newfoundland following high temps, heavy rain

Unseasonably warm temperatures and heavy rain has flooded parts of several communities across Newfoundland.

Unseasonably warm temperatures and heavy rain has flooded parts of communities across Newfoundland.

In St. John's, heavy rain and debris buildup on a culvert screen caused a sinkhole to develop on Kenmount Road.

It resulted in the closure of the eastboundcurb lane, in front of Capital Hyundai on Thursday.

In Port Blandford, on the east coast of the island, high water levels brought slabs of ice and snow to shore on a roadway in the town.

Heavy rains and warm temperatures, combined with a lot of snow already down on the streets of Corner Brook, created flooding, washouts and road closures across the west coast city Wednesday.

That's bad news for winter sport enthusiasts, who will now have to wait for the next freeze and snowfall to enjoy the season.

CBC Meteorologist Ryan Snoddonsaid Grey River reported the most rainfall with 86 mm, and theWreckhouse recorded the highest wind speeds, at 137 km/hr.

In Conception Bay South, a mobile home, which a neighbour said was vacant, had its roof and siding ripped off by high winds.
