Police charge inmate for assaulting 2 female correctional officers

A 37-year-old inmate has beencharged for assaulting two correctional officers, according to police.

The inmate was beingheld in the lockup on Water Street in St. John's, where the alleged incident happened on Oct. 8, according to a statement from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

Two female officers suffered injuries, with one sustaining what the force described as serious injuries thatrequiredtreatement at a hospital. She was later released.

"The other correctional officer received minor injuries but did not require medical treatment," Cst. James Cadigan said in a statement.

The man was charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm. The inmate will appear in provincial court at a later date.
