Jody Clarke, Calvin Kenny sentenced for HMP chapel riot

The last two inmates convicted of participating in a riot and a targeted attack on Kenny Green at the chapel of Her Majesty's Penitentiary last year have been sentenced to more jail time.

Calvin Kenny, 24, and Jody Clarke, 39, learned Thursday afternoon in provincial court in St. John's of their 14-month sentences.

Kenny, who is already serving federal prison time at Springhill Institute, and Clarke, who has just five months left of his sentence because of time served, were ordered by Judge Colin Flynn to provide a DNA sample.

Clarke, who wasseen on HMP chapel surveillance beating Green, a convicted killer,will serve 18 months probation once his sentence is complete.

Kenny's lawyer had asked for a 12-month sentence for his client, adding Kenny was the "new kid" in the penitentiary when the riot broke out, and that it has caused him mental distress ever since.

Clarke's lawyer suggested time servedas an appropriate sentence.

Crown prosecutor Danny Vavasourhad asked for a sentence in the range of two years, citing the fear it instilled in the correctional officers and members of the clergy who were present during the riot.

Vavasour said the sentence also needs to send a message to other inmates that their jailhouse antics won't be tolerated.

Philip Pynn is the last inmate accused in the riot, and his case had yet to be dealt with.

This will not be the last court appearance for Clarke, however, as heis also accused of participating in a separate jail riot last June in which $100,000 worth of damage was caused.
