John Haggie wins Gander Liberal nomination race - again

A former president of the provincial and national medical associations will be the Liberal candidate in Gander for the provincial election, after winning his second nomination battle since October.

John Haggie beat GamboMayor Peter Lush on Wednesday, and will represent the Liberals in the Newfoundland and Labrador provincialelection this fall.

Haggie won last year in a three-way vote, but the nomination was reopened after electoral boundaries were changed to reduce the number of seats in the legislature from 48 to 40.

In keeping with its practice with other nomination meetings, the party did not release results of the vote count.

Haggie, who lives in Appleton, has been a familiar voice on medical issues in Canada in recentyears. In 2001, he became president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association.

In 2011, he serveda one-year stint as president of the Canadian Medical Association.
