Signal Hill area focus of police search for Larry Wellman's killer

Police renewed their manhunt Wednesdayin theareaneighbouringtheCaptain's Quarters Hotel whereLarry Wellman was shot when he intervenedin an armed robbery.

Wellman, 63,died en route tohospital.

"He died as he lived, helping a person in need," reads an online obituary for Wellman.

A visitation service will be held atFillatre's Funeral Home in Corner Brook Oct. 10 from 2-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wildlife Preservation Canada.

Wellman's son Chris Wellman said he'll miss being able tospeakwith his father.

"I will miss our telephone calls where we talked about everything from golf, to the cosmos, to the intelligence of crows. He was able to converse intelligently on [a] vast array of subjects," saidWellman.

"He seemed to know a little bit about everything. From him I learned that money is not the be-all and end-all, I learned that how you treat someone is more important that how you dress, and I learned that a smile will solve most of life's problems."

Still searching for suspect

In a news release Wednesday morning, the RNC said it, along with Rovers Ground Search and Rescue, would be looking in the area ofQuidi Vidi Road, Forest Roadand Signal Hill Road.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area and for residents who live on those streets to search their property for "suspicious items."

If anything is found, residents are asked to call police.

On Tuesday, police released images of the suspect taken from surveillance footage. The man is wearing a hoodie in the photo and his face can't be seen.
