A new multi-million dollar bridge has been wailing sounds that can be heard for kilometres away, according to a resident in Placentia.

The town's new lift bridge a $48-million project has been making loud, keening noises as it has been lifted and lowered forthe past month, according to Jane Whelan Hynes.

On a good day, the bridge is raised about six times, according to Hynes, who can hear all the action from her backyard.

"When the wind is still, I'm telling you you can hear that for miles," Hynes says. "It sounds like something in a horror film."

Hoping for a fix

Placentia's new bridge has not yet opened to traffic.

Hynes says she understands there's still work left to do, but she's hopeful the squealing will be fixed by the time the bridge is completed.

In a statement, the Department of Transportation and Works said any issues identified during the constructionprocess will be dealt with.

"It is during the commissioning phase that issues, such as the noise emitting from the bridge, are investigated and addressed."

If it isnot, Hynes says the scene will not be pretty.

"We will lose our minds," she said. "I've nicknamed it the banshee bridge, because it sounds like a wailing banshee."
