Metrobus driver among dozen 'heroes' given life-saving awards by St. John Ambulance

A Metrobusdriver who jumped to the aid of an injuredpedestrian is among the dozen Newfoundlanders and Labradorians being honoured with life-saving awardson Thursday.

Max Benson, who used first aid to help a St. John's woman after she was hit by a car on Water Street last year, receiveda Gold Life-Saving Award fromSt. John ambulance.

Benson left his bus, manoeuvredunderneath the car where the womanhad landed, and started treating herhead wound.

St. John ambulance says he used first aid to save the woman's life.

Benson protected the victim from ahot muffler, and received second-degree burns in the process.

Another 11people from the province are being recognized with Silver Life-Saving Awards, including Mary Lou Dill, Sgt. Joe Smyth, Gerard Bursey and Kelly Potts.

Dill used CPR to "save the life" of a young boy in Florida while on vacation; Smyth helped a Special Olympian who was choking in Corner Brook in February 2015, and Bursey and Potts performed CPR on a colleague at Oceanex.
