Police in Corner Brook have arrested a woman in connection with a late-night mugging against an elderly woman whose purse was stolen shortly after she won money at a video lottery terminal.

The 82-year-old woman was celebrating her birthday at a local bar and was walking home with her VLT winnings when she was attacked on Broadway, shortly before midnight on Tuesday night.

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers picked up Veronica Ann Park, 37, around 10 p.m. Wednesday night, about 24 hours after the attack.

The victim, who was knocked to the ground during the robbery, was treated in hospital for a fractured arm.

Sgt. Tim Buckle said the suspect was picked up at a Corner Brook residence without incident.

Park is no stranger to the legal system, with a criminal record dating back to 2001.

She was last sentenced two years ago, and has faced a series of charges, ranging from theft, drug trafficking, breaking court orders and assault with a weapon.

The RNC had been canvassing local businesses and were looking for video surveillance that might be useful in locating their suspect.
