Let's try this again: Memorial University reviewing bids on new science building

A second attempt to kick-start construction of the massive new science building at Memorial University in St. John's is well underway.

The university is now reviewing bids for the project, and a recommendation is expected to be made to the university's board of regents on March 16.

If a bid is accepted, it must then receive final approval from the Newfoundland and Labradorgovernment.

A university spokesperson said this process could be completed in April, and construction could then begin.

The university is not saying how many bids were received, or revealing the bid amounts, but the total budget for the project is $325 million.

Millions have already been spent on site work and a sprawling foundation for the 480,000 square foot facility.

The project was stalled last year after the first call for bids came in well above what had been budgeted, so the university went back to the drawing board to try to reduce costs.
