New para-transit system in St. John's

Disabled people in the St. John's area are welcoming a new technology-friendly para-transit system where users can book rides via phone, text, e-mail or fax.
Michelle Janes, who uses the para-transit system regularly, says she's looking forward to taking advantage of the new system because the old one wasn't always reliable.

Disabled people in the St. John's area are welcoming a new technology-friendly para-transit system where users can book rides via phone, text, e-mail or fax.

The new system called GoBus will see 18 new buses in operation.

Pauline Crann, who uses the system regularly told CBC News that she thinks the new system will be a big improvement compared to the old system.

"I'm excited to hear it's passenger-focussed and that open communication is available," Crann said.

Some users of the para-transit system said the old system wasn't always reliable.

"I could be calling in for three hours so it could be frustrating, yes frustrating, so I'm hoping this could be a lot better," said Michelle Janes, who has been in wheelchair since the age of 13.

The cost for a lift on the new buses is $2.25, which is the same price as the old bus service.

GoBus will be extended on Friday nights and over the weekend the service will start earlier in the morning and run later in the evening.

As a request by users of the old system, the new drivers will be given sensitivity training.

The new para-transit system is due to go into operation on Jan. 1, 2012.
