Part of Burgeo highway washes out

Crews were working Monday to repair damage to the regional highway that provides the only road link to the southern Newfoundland community of Burgeo.

Crews were working Monday to repair damage to the regional highway that provides the only road link to the southern Newfoundland community of Burgeo.

The pavement and roadbed of part of the Burgeo highway washed away as heavy rain pounded part of Newfoundland over the weekend.

Authorities urged driversto be extremely cautious onthe highway, which Burgeo with the Trans-Canada Highway.

The road on the Burgeo highwaywas down to one lane on a section about two kilometres north of Lloyd's River.

Officials were hoping to have repairs completed by Monday.

The rain caused flooding in numerous communities, including Corner Brook, where the bridge on Main Street had to be temporarily closed on Saturday. A popular trail was also overwhelmed by water.

Washouts were reported in several areas, including parts of the Trans-Canada Highway and on regional highways.
