PC leadership selection rules released, date set

The Newfoundland and Labrador Progressive Conservatives have decided when they'll elect a new leader.

The Tories released their rules for the leadership election process on Tuesday, setting the date for picking a new leader on April 28, 2018.

Carbonear lawyer Jessica Babb and former cabinet minister Shawn Skinner will co-chair the leadership selection committee.

Campaigns can spend a maximum of $200,000, and candidates cannot spend any more than $25,000 of their own money in their campaign.

A company or individual donation cannot exceed $10,000. All campaigns will have to disclose any donations they receive.

The deadline to enter the leadership race is Jan. 15, 2018. New party members or supporters have until Feb. 28 to register to vote.

A leadership election process was launched after former premier Paul Davis announced last fall he would step down from the role.

However, he more recently said he would not completely rule out another stint as leader.
