Extensive damage to recreational vehicles after fire in southern Labrador

A building in Point Amour, Labrador, used to house recreational vehicles like boats, campers and motor homes caught fire over the weekend, causing extensive damage.

Firefighters from Forteau and L'Anse-au-Loup were called to the Old Arena building in Point Amour on Saturday morning.

RCMP Cpl. Rick Mills ofthe Happy Valley-Goose Bay detachment says the fire department had been at the site previously. At around 9 a.m., both RCMP and fire crews were called back.

When crews arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames.

RCMP Cpl. Rick Mills says there was extensive damage to all the property housed inside the building.

"There was quite a few vehicles in the storage facility at the time," he said.

An RCMP fire investigator has finished at the scene, but Mills says it's too early to say whether someone set the fire on purpose.

"We're not ruling anything out at this point," he said. "There was no power to the building, so of course that raises concern right away. However, you've got a number of vehicles in that facility which had gasoline in them, et cetera, and we're trying to rule out everything and look at every possibility."

There were no injuries reported.

Anyone with information, or who may have seen "suspicious activity" around the building, is asked to call Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
