Thesummer recreationalfood fishery opened July 1, and this year runs an extra 14 days, including every weekend in the summer months.

Participants are limited to five groundfish per day, including cod, while boats are limited to 15 fish in total.

Those limits weren't a big issue in Quidi Vidi, according to Gary Harnum who was trying his hand at the fishery this year.

"The first time was not very good," he said. "I broke down and had to use the kicker motor to get back in."

He did not make a catch on Friday, but that is not going to damper his spirits.

"I'm determined to catch some fish, some time, during the season," he said, laughing.
