For weeks the Ruth Avenue exit on Pitts Memorial Drive has been closed to traffic to make way for a roundabout.

The traffic measure was tested on Tuesday and opened Wednesday to traffic.

"One of the things Newfoundlandersalways sayis that one of the things we're challenged with ismerging in traffic, we hear debates about it," said Mount Pearl Mayor Randy Simms.

"Well this is the ultimate merge method. It works very well. It's very efficient and effective."

Simms admits some people who aren't familiar with roundabouts may be confused, but said the community is well-informed about the change.

"Most of us understand roundabouts, what they are, how they're suppose to work," he said.

The multi-lane roundabout is intended to ease the flow of traffic around the new Galway development.
