Search underway for missing kayaker in the Strait of Belle Isle

A massive search for a kayaker believed to be missing in the Strait of Belle Isle will continue Friday.

"We continued searching throughout the night, haven't had any luck yet," Mark Gould with the Coast Guard's Marine Search and Rescue told the CBC's Corner Brook Morning Showon Friday.

The Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre in St. John's received a report of the missing kayaker Wednesday.

The man is inhis 20sand was last seen in Blanc-Sablon, Que., wearing a red dry suit and a yellow life-jacket Aug. 11. He usually dressed warmly, Gould said.

A kayak matching the description of the one the man owned has been found on a beach near Forteauin Labrador.

There are a few focused areas but the search is covering almost the entire Strait of Belle Isle and into the gulf, Gould said.

'Quite the team effort'

"When we don't have a real accurate last known position, oreven a time frame of when something happened, it forces us to expand to make sure we cover all possibilities," he said.

The St. John's and Quebec sub-centresand the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre inHalifax are working together on the search.

Several coast guard and coast guard auxiliary vessels are searching the area along with a Cormorant helicopter from CFB Gander and an Aurora aircraft.

Fishery officers withDFO are also assisting in the search, and there is a ground search of the Forteau shoreline area being done by the RCMP and local rangers, with additional air resources fromJRCCHalifax and Provincial Airlines.

"It's been quite the team effort," Gould said.
