RCMP in eastern Newfoundland said Wednesday a driver caught speeding an offroad vehicle on a main street in Harbour Grace late one night wound up injuring a passenger in a crash and is expected to be charged over it.

Police said neither of the two people seen speeding Saturday night around 11:30 p.m. NT on Harvey Street were wearing helmets.

An attempt at a traffic stop did not work, so police called another officer who was in the area.

"In anticipation of the offroad vehicle approaching, the second officer positioned the police vehicle in the middle of the road and activated emergency lights," police said in a statement.

"Upon approach of the police vehicle, the offroad vehicle operator attempted to evade the traffic stop by turning around in the roadway and subsequently crashed the side-by-side on the roadway."

A 48-year-old woman, who had been the passenger on the all-terrain vehicle, was taken to hospital in Carbonear. Police said her life was not at stake.

Police said the driver, a 42-year-old man, had neither insurance nor registration.

RCMP said charges are pending, and that its investigation is still underway.
