Pothole peeves: St. David's man fills the holes himself

The main road in St. David's has a pothole problem, and one resident has taken the issue into his own hands.

Ron King has filled the potholes on the road himself not once, but twice.

"The first time [I filled them] was in April and then I did it again in May, and it's going to have to be done again because it's getting pretty bad again," King told CBC Radio's The Corner Brook Morning Show.

"It's taking a beating there now with all the rain and stuff. There's a lot of traffic on, we got a lot of big, heavy trucks, see."

The road connects the community, via a bridge, to Jeffrey's.

King estimates some of the potholes are a foot wide and some are a foot deep. He said they stretch the road for 300-400 feet and havebeen there since earlier this year.

"Well I just fill in the holes there, getting some gravel along the shoulder of the road to put in the holes because I got tired of getting my vehicle all beat up...so I decided to start filling the potholes," King said.

King's car has needed repairs from driving over the potholes; they're hard to avoid because there are so many of them, he said.

"A lot of people [are] having trouble with their vehicles," he said.

King said he shouldn't have to fix the potholes himself, but he'd rather put in the work than ruin hiscar. He wants to see the road and potholes fixed for himself and for others, he said.

"It helps me from beating up my vehicle, you know, it's more expense, [I'm] trying to keep it away from that," he said.

"I got to travel on it, you know, day in day out and stuff so. Plus a lot of other people are travelling back and forth, and you know everybody is paying taxes ...We're paying taxes and everything else but nothing seems to be getting done."
