Justice Minister Terry French says the provincial government will replace Her Majesty's Penitentiary "as soon as we possibly can."

In an interview with The Canadian Press, French said he shares concernsabout safety and overcrowding at the St. John's prison, parts of which date back to the Victorian age. The thought ofreplacing the penitentiary, though, dates back several decades, with a new prison emerging as a key issue in the 1988 federal election in the province.
