Wanted man in custody

A man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in St. John's has been arrested, according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

Police arrested Phillip Wayne Pynn, 25, outside a house in the east end of St. John's at about 4 p.m. Monday.

Pynn is expected to appear in court Tuesday to face charges of second degree murder and attempted murder.

Pynn had been identified originally as a "person of interest" in the RNC's investigation of a fatal shooting in the east end of St. John's Saturday night.

Meanwhile, CBC News has learned the shooting was the result of an armed robbery gone bad. Over the course of the confrontation, Nick Winsor, 20,was shot and killed.

At about 10p.m. Saturday, sources said that Winsor, Pynn and a third man tried to force their way into the house on Portugal Cove Road.

They were looking for an expensive gold chain they believed to be in the possession of the homeowner. Multiple sources said Pynn had a shotgun and the other men had crowbars, but the homeowner wouldn't let them in.

Pynn and his accomplices led the homeowner to a garage at the rear of the house, where sources said they beat the homeowner with crowbars.

Pynn had his shotgun the entire time.Sources said over the course of the beating there was a struggle and the gun went off.

Winsor was shot and killed.

A key factor in the investigation could be exactly what the police learn from the house's security system.

There were four cameras around the house and a full suite of recording equipment inside, which caught much of what happened Saturday night on tape.

Well known to police

Pynn is wellknown to police.In September 2008, he went on the run from drug and assault charges and evaded police for two weeks.At that time, police considered Pynn to be dangerous.

"Mr. Pynn does have a violent history, a violent past," Const. Paul Davis, a spokesperson for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, said at the time. "And police, anytime we're dealing with Mr. Pynn, we use extra caution because he has an ability he's displayed in the past for violence."

Pynn has a previously scheduled court date this Wednesday for a charge on damaging property at Her Majesty's Penintentiary in May 2011. Pynn was released from jail two weeks ago on $2,000 bail.

The RNC will hold a news conferenceTuesday to give more details of the investigation and arrest.
