Police say a man suspected of robbing a St. John's bank picked the wrong vehicle to carjack Friday night.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said two men are facing multiple charges after an armed robbery of a TD Canada Trustbankon Kelsey Drive.

The RNC said a firearm was discharged around 7:45 p.m. Friday at the bank. A statement from the police Saturday afternoon said two men fled in a pickup truck, which then went off the road on snow-covered O'Leary Avenue.

Police said one man was apprehended immediately while the other fled on foot and tried to take control at gunpoint of a vehicle stopped in nearby traffic.

The RNCsaid the driver of that vehicle was an off-duty RCMP officer who "physically subdued the suspect." Neither the RCMPofficer nor his passenger were injured, police said, and an RNCpatrol officer arrived to take the suspect into custody.

Travis Wade, 33, of St. John's is facing six charges, including armed robbery, forcible confinement and assault with a weapon.

Adam Hayden, 31,of Conception Harbour is facing several charges, including armed robbery, intentionally discharging a firearm, and multiple other firearms-related offences.

Both men were held in custody to appear at provincial court in St. John's today.
