Unseasonably warm temperatures are set to hit the province Wednesday. Paired with rain, they'reexpected to cause significant snow melt.

CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon saidthe cold weather people have beenexperiencing across Newfoundland won'tlast long, with a "temperature swing" expected for Tuesday and into Wednesday.

However, the chill will return again Thursday.

"As we work throughout the next 24 to 48 hours we're really going to be temperatures on the rise," Snoddon said Monday evening.

Rainfall warnings have been issued for Burgeo-Ramea and Port aux Basques Wednesday, while a special weather statement is in effect for the rest of the province as temperatures are set to rise. (Environment Canada)

Between 15 and 30 centimetres of snow fell in areas across the province Saturday and snow squall and wind warnings persisted on Monday.

Environment Canada has special weather statements in effect for Newfoundland and Labrador, with strong winds, mild temperatures, heavy rain bringing a significant snow melt.

Additional strong southerly winds Tuesday will cause temperatures to rise to well above seasonal values.

"We'll see a little snow on the leading edge of this warm front Tuesday afternoon and then it's a mix to showers as temperatures really rise Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning," said Snoddon.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay and southeastern Labrador will see a mix from snow to rain, with heavy snow set for Labrador City.

Environment Canada has a winter storm watch in effect for western Labrador as of early Tuesday morning.

Rainfall, wind warning

In addition, rain is forecast to begin on Newfoundland's west coast late Tuesday night and spread across the island, with the heaviest rain falling on Wednesday.

In Burgeo-Ramea and Port aux Basques, Environment Canada has a rain fall warning in effect for Wednesday.

Amounts between 20 and 40 millimetres are expected to fall through Wednesday, and combined with warm temperatures will cause significant snow melt.

The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb the rain, and heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

In the Port aux Basques area, a Wreckhouse wind warning is also in effect.

Winds gusting up to 120 km/h can been expected in the Wreckhouse area through Wednesday, in addition to the rainfall warning.

Temperatures are likely to drop back around the freezing mark by Thursday afternoon.
