Snow closes some eastern Newfoundland schools, expected to taper off by noon

Somepeople living in eastern Newfoundland had to break out their shovels again Wednesday for a messy morning commute, as more snow hit the region and closed some schools.

On the Avalon Peninsula, some areas saw 18 centimetresfall overnight Tuesday, with Environment Canada anticipating between two and fourcm to fall throughout the morning.

Snowfall warnings remained in effect for many eastern areas of the island, but flurries are expected to taper off by noon, according to Environment Canada.

Shortly after 9 a.m., awhite pickup truck went off the Outer Ring Road, westbound, between Team Gushue Highway and Thorburn Road.

The male driver, who was alone in the truck, was not hurt.

A number ofschools were closed in the eastern part of the islandwith updates to come for the afternoon.

However,all metro region schools remained opened for the day.

Several departing flights were also cancelled at St. John's International Airport.
