Residents of Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, are being advised to boil their water after traces of coliform bacteriawere found during routine water sampling.

The boil water advisory has been in effect since Friday.

Dr. Maureen Baikie, Nunavut's Chief Medical Officer of Health, says the boil water advisory was issued for Sanikiluaq as a precautionary measure.

"We advise them to use boiled water for anything that requires consumption of water, so that's for drinking water, for making baby formula, for brushing your teeth, for cooking, washing vegetables, those kinds of things." said Dr. MaureenBaikieis Nunavut's Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Baikie says the advisory was issued as a precautionary measure. No illnesses have been reported.

Residents should bring water to a rolling boil for at least a minute before using it for things such asdrinking, cooking or brushing teeth.

The department is trying to find out how the bacteria got into the water supply.

They need two sets of water samples to come back clean before the advisory can be lifted.
