Clyde River opposes offshore seismic surveys

Clyde River is again voicing its opposition to offshore oil exploration activity near the community's hunting grounds.

Oil consortium applies to do exploration work in Baffin Bay and Davis Strait

Clyde River is again voicing its opposition to offshore oil exploration activity near the community's hunting grounds.

A consortium of three companies wants to do seismic surveys in Baffin Bay and Davis Strait. The National Energy Board is assessing the proposal but Clyde River Mayor Jerry Natanine says the community's concerns aren't being heard.

"Oil is a good source of money all over the world and if our concerns can be met, there could be support for it," he said. "Up to date, noneof our concerns hasbeen met and none of them have been answered and it doesn't seem like they'regoing to be answered."

Inuit organizations recommend exploration notbe approved until an environmental assessment is done to evaluate the impact on marine life.

The consortium has already begun posting jobs for its project and some people are worried that means it is getting the go-ahead.
