A private member's bill, that brought Yukon MP Ryan Leef a lot of attention, has been dropped by the Conservative government.

Yukon MP Ryan Leef is OK with the Conservative party dropping his private members bill on FASD and referring the issue to a parliamentary committee. He says it will mean the new version of the bill will be improved and expedited.

The bill would have meant fetal alcohol spectrum disorder could be considered a mitigating factor in sentencingwhen a judge believed FASD was a factor in a crime.

Leef had been praised for introducing the bill, but last week he agreed to set it aside and refer the issue to a parliamentary committee for more study.

A government MP said there may have been unforeseen consequences if the bill was passed.
