Conservatives drop Yukon MP Ryan Leefs FASD bill

A private member's bill, that brought Yukon MP Ryan Leef a lot of attention, has been dropped by the Conservative government.

The bill would have meant fetal alcohol spectrum disorder could be considered a mitigating factor in sentencingwhen a judge believed FASD was a factor in a crime.

Leef had been praised for introducing the bill, but last week he agreed to set it aside and refer the issue to a parliamentary committee for more study.

A government MP said there may have been unforeseen consequences if the bill was passed.

Leef says he's okaywith the new approach.

He says it will mean the new version of his bill will be improved and expedited.
