Edward Erasmus was sworn in on Wednesday as the new grand chief of the Tlicho aboriginal government in the Northwest Territories.

Erasmus, a former chief in Behchoko, N.W.T., secured 711 out of 1,472 votes in a byelection on Tuesday.

Trailing behind Erasmus were former N.W.T. MLAs James Wah-Shee and Leon Lafferty, who had 448 and 302 votes, respectively. Eleven ballots were rejected.

Erasmus told CBC News he believes people voted for him because of his experience he has been involved with the Tlicho for about three decades as a chief, grand chief and negotiator and his familiarity with the Tlicho land-claim agreement.

Erasmus said he wants to improve communication between the grand chief and the Tlicho's community chiefs, as well as develop programs for youth.

Eligible voters in the four Tlicho communities Whati, Behchoko, Wekweeti and Gameti and in Yellowknife cast ballots in Tuesday's byelection.

The byelection was called late last year, after Joe Rabesca resigned amid controversy about his leadership.

Rabesca is currently facing a sexual assault charge related to an alleged incident in Behchoko in October. He pleaded not guilty to the charge last month.

Erasmus will serve as grand chief until September 2013.
