Fentie opposes Yukon Senate election

The Yukon's lone Senate seat should be filled quickly by appointment rather than by election, Premier Dennis Fentie says.

The Yukon'slone Senate seat should be filled quickly by appointment rather than by election, Premier Dennis Fentie says.

The seat will become vacant at the end of December when Ione Christensen retires from the position she's held for the past seven years.

Christensenhanded in her resignation last week, a day afterPrime Minister Stephen Harper announced he'd like all future senators to be elected.

Fentie says Senate elections may be fine in principlebut it is not practical for the Yukon at this time.

"I'm more concerned about Yukon representation in the upper chamber, that's in the immediate, and that's what I'd like to address first," he told CBC News Monday.

Fentie says he's going to urge Harper to see the Yukon's situation is special, since it only has one seat.

He also wantsinput as to who the next senator will be.
