Igloolik hunters hope potential mine won't hurt wildlife

The second week of final hearings into the proposed Mary River mine in Nunavut begin in Igloolik today.

The Nunavut Impact Review Board held hearings in Iqaluit last week.

Now, Baffinland will be answering questions directly from residents of the hamlet.

Igloolik is home to about 1,600 people and is located 240 kilometres from the proposed massive iron ore mine.

"We hope to find out more if this really will go ahead, or will be put off for a time. I am hoping, and we've been working on this for a long time, to prepare the ways that the impacts won't be so devastating," said David Irgnaut, the chair of the Igloolik Hunters and Trappers Organization.

The Nunavut Impact Review Board will be in the community until Wednesday.

The hearings then move to Pond Inlet from Thursday to Saturday.
