Igloolik man sentenced for standoff

A 38-year-old Igloolik man will be underhouse arrest for two years less a day for his involvement in an armedstandoff in the Nunavut community last February.

Theophile Akkuardjuk, sentenced Jan. 30, was accused of threatening his former common-law wife and holding his three children hostage for four days.

Akkuardjukoriginally faced 15 charges including two counts of attempted murder and a number of firearms offences, but he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of assault with a weapon. Six other charges were stayed.

In addition tohis sentence of house arrest, he has to perform 240 hours of community service and pay the hamlet for damage caused to a vehicle during the incident.

Akkuardjuk has also been banned from possessing a weapon for the next 10 years.

The community of 1,300 is located about 850 kilometres northwest of Iqaluit.
