Iqaluit building evacuated due to smoke from cooking pot

The Iqaluit Fire Department responded to alarms at Building 4096, where smoke could be seen coming out of the building, after 10 p.m. on Saturday night.

There was no fire, only light smoke, said Deputy Fire Chief George Seigler. The alarms were activated by a cooking pot on a stove in a second floor unit.

The unit where the smoke came from had one occupant in it at the time, said Seigler.

"If you're going to be cooking, try and stay awake and watch what you have on the stove," he said.

Some residents were evacuated from the building but were allowed back in about 40 minutes later.
