Lawyer finishes report into death of Makibi Timilak

The lawyer conducting a review into the death of a baby in Cape Dorsetin 2012 has completed her final report.

Katherine Peterson says she submitted her review to the government of Nunavut on Nov. 20 it's 54 pages plusappendices and recommendations.

Three-month-old Makibi Timilak diedhoursafter a nurse at the local health centre allegedly refused to see him. The nurse, Debbie McKeown, was later promoted to the community's top nursing position.

Health Minister Paul Okalik told the legislative assembly the review would look at the operations of the Department of Health and related departments to determine what steps were taken after the baby's death and whether they were appropriate.

Peterson, a retired lawyer, had access to all government documentation in the case. Earlier this month, she said she heard testimony from a wide array of community members and health care workers, but said the review will not include comments from McKeown, who has litigation pending with the registered nurses association.

The health department said today that the report is confidential for now. No word yet on when it will be released publicly.

The parents of Makibi told CBC today that they have not seen the report, nor have they heard from the Nunavut government.
