No snap election, says Fentie

Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie has vowed that last week's high profile resignation of his energy minister won't trigger a snap election.

Fentie was in Iqaluit Friday for meetings with fellow northern premiers Floyd Roland and Eva Aariak.

Fentie dispelled suggestions that the resignation last week of Yukon energy minister Brad Cathers would force an early election.

"We're a long ways away from the next election, so the government's focus is to continue the job it was elected to do," said Fentie. "I am the leader today, and as I said, I am going to continue to do the job I was elected to do."

Cathers resigned last week alleging dishonest and bullying behaviour from the premier and his resignation from cabinet could put the government in a minority position in the legislature if Cathers votes with the opposition.

There's no word from Fentie on when or if he'll recall the legislature this fall.
