Nunavut anti-poverty group visits Kivalliq

Nunavuts Anti-Poverty Secretariat is travelling to Rankin Inlettoday tomeet withcommunities in the Kivalliq region.

Director Ed McKenna says they will review the Makimaniq poverty reduction action plan that was developed at last year's poverty summit in Iqaluit.

"So we want to make sure that people see what's in the plan and are able to validate it basically to say, yes, those are indeed the issues we want included in the Makimaniq plan," he said.

McKenna said they will look at how they will implement the plan in communities, and learn about existing projects in the region.

Almost every community in the Kivalliq has some project underway related to country food, he said, "whether it's providing country food through a feast or in some communities there are food banks, or other initiatives around making sure people have access to healthy food."

Similar meetings will be held in Cambridge Bay and Iqaluit in June.
