Nunavut filmmaker wins Genie Award

The Genie Awards honour excellence in Canadian film.

A film by Zacharias Kunuk of Igloolik, Nunavut, about Sirmilik National Park won the Best Short Documentary category at this year's Genie Awards. (CBC)

Kunuk, of Igloolik, Nunavut, directed Sirmilik as part of the Canada Parks Project.

Sirmilik focuses on the landscape and wildlife of Sirmilik National Park on North Baffin Island. Tanya Tagaq, originally from Cambridge Bay, provided some of the music.

Kunuk's film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner won the Genie forbest motion picture in 2002.
