Nunavut one step closer to suicide prevention strategy

A new report with input from Nunavummiut about suicide prevention will be used towards the creation of a suicide prevention strategy for the territory.

A new report with input from Nunavummiut about suicide prevention will be used towards the creation of a suicide prevention strategy for the territory.

Many of the public comments in the report, released on Thursday, call for more mental health services in the territory, as well as more community-based and culturally-based initiatives.

The report was compiled by a working group that includes representatives from the Nunavut government, Inuit land claim organization Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., the RCMP and the Embrace Life Council.

The group held 54 consultations across the territory in 2009, reaching more than 500 people in total.

The working group says it's using details from the report to draft a suicide prevention strategy and implementation plan. The strategy is expected to be completed in June.
