Nunavut Planning Commission takes legal action over funding

The Nunavut Planning Commission says it has begun legal action in Federal Court after the federal government did not come up with money for its final hearing on the territory's land use plan.

The Nunavut Planning Commission says it has begun legal action in Federal Court after the federal government did notcome up with money for its final hearing on the territory's land use plan.

The plan sets the terms for future development in Nunavut and tries to balance traditional land use with wildlife and environmental concerns.

In June, the commission cancelled its final hearings on the document, saying itneeds more than $1.7 million to go ahead.

The commission wants to fly up to 200 people to Iqaluit for the gathering including five people from every community in Nunavut, planning commission staff, commission board members and other stakeholders.

The federal government says it has already provided millions of dollars to the NPC since it was created.
